???s With little ones

By: Buzziemommie   on  7/10/2003 8:27:05 AM

I have 4 children 5,2,1, 5months I homeschool now but don't start until 9-9:30 We do K5. In Aug. We are starting 1st grade and want to start at 8. So my question is getting children that young up at 6:30 too early? My husband has to be at work at 6:30. Then around what times should I give naps 10? Bedtimes 9? My husband does construction and he has been working to 7-8 at night and wants to see the children. But then again wants to go to bed early since he has to go to work early.I am trying to get our schedule to work with my husband so he don't have to be tired at work all day because he had to stay up late.I want to get them up at 6:30 because 45 min get dressed teeth and eat breakfast. Then 30 minutes devotionals the free time then start school at 8:10

If you're going to be getting them up that early, it's gonna take a little while for them all to adjust and you may have a few very cranky days, but it can be done. If I were going to change our schedule, getting my children up that early, our nap time would fall around 11:30. So, I would feed them lunch around 11:00 and put them down for a nap around 11:30. Then, I'd say bedtime would be around 7:30. My children require a lot sleep. If they weren't falling asleep, I would push off bedtime about 1/2 at a time. But, I would think they'll be ready for sleep. (mine always were when they were getting up by 6:30)

To figure out your schedule, I would look at what your schedule is now and just move everything up. Example: Here's our current schedule...wake up at 8, naps at 1 bed at 8. To change it I would....wake up at 6:30, naps at 11:30, bed between 7 & 7:30

I hope everything works out well.

Tracey

My crew usually gets up between 6:30-7:00 most days and we go to bed 8:30-9:00. This works pretty well for us. My crew is 9 yob, 7yob, 3yob, 16 month old girl.

The baby still takes 2 naps..one at 10 and another at 3. My 3 yo takes a nap several days a week. My oldest doesn't nap anymore unless sick and the 7 yo only naps on Sunday.

Hope that helps some. I think what you are wanting to do can be done---just be sure to keep your nap time(s). Oh, don't forget about a mid morning and mid afternoon snack to keep those blood sugars level--does wonders for behavior!

Blessings,
Carol

I would encourage you to consider why you want to start at 8. I originally thought that was important, in order to be able to get everything done by lunch. My dh also works till late in the evening, and I wanted the girls to be up to see him. Also, we were having a melt down at 5pm or so. The answer has been to start school at 9am, and then save some things like maybe science till 5 when we need structured time, supper at 6:30 or 7pm and then can stay up with Dad for awile.

I guess I'm still not sure reading your post why you want to get the dc up so early? I don't think 9-6:30 is long enough sleep for little ones that age. I think you'll run into a lot of grumpiness if you try drag them out at 6:30 after not going to bed til 9. Even if you follow Tracey's suggestion of doing naps at 11:30 (which I would do if mine got up *on their own*, at 6:30), I think you'll have a hard time managing the mornings.

I just don't think you can do 6:30 after a 9:00 bedtime for that age. At least I know I couldn't with mine. I think you need to choose one or the other ~ earlier bedtime, or later rise time. So, if your goal (which I *think* is what you said?) is to keep them up late enough to have daddy time, then you need to reconsider that early rising time until they're older.

JMO. ;o)

My children are up at 6 a.m. I put them to bed at night at 8 (one year old) and 8:30 (five year old.) The one year old naps for an hour at 9 a.m. They both go down for an afternoon nap at 1:00. The one year old sleeps 2 to 3 hours. The five year old hardly sleep at all, but must remain on her bed and play or read quietly. We're morning people. I usually wake up between 4:15 and 5 a.m.
