Anything you've done that revolutionized your school sched?

By: motherbear   on  7/24/2003 2:05:27 PM

I'm just wondering if anyone would like to share something they've done that made their school experience/schedule SO MUCH BETTER! We'll be beginning our 4th yr hmsclg, this yr I'll have 9, 7, and 5 yr olds to teach and 2 1/2 yr old and 6 mo old to occupy. Thanks!

I don't have anything new to share. The thing that made the biggest improvement for us came straight out of MOTH. It was to combine subjects for one child in order to free up a block of time to work with another child. That uninterupted time was a huge improvement for us.

We combined son #1's history and science reading so I could work with #2. Then #2 worked on some subjects while I did Math and English tutoring time with #1. Then while he was working on his Math and English assignments I was with #2.

Having some alone time with me eliminated so much frustration for them (and me as well). I also added a break time and chore training time for each child. Like I said, nothing new but these are what "revolutionized" our homeschooling and make it so much easier!

We have a 2nd grader (7yos) and a 4th grader (9yod) (as well as a preschooler 3yod) this year. Last year (and we are doing it again this year) we combined the two older ones for Science, Health and History using the in between grade. So this year I am using 3rd grade Science, History and Health. They enjoy doing it together and it saves me so much time. Our preschooler listens in on the lessons too. We used BJ last year, but are using Abeka for those sujects this year as I like it so much better - less teacher intensive.

God bless,

Jill

Recess! 30 min. at 10 am. And not being too ambitious or complicated in scheduling.

for us it works nicely if I have some time alone to teach math and phonics or to listen to reading aloud- so during that time either the other child works on seat type work-ie.. penmanship or spelling or they have playtime with the babies or something like that. Keep them busy I guess would be the key:) also I found it helpful to rotate subjects that are more taxing for that child with more fun. for example one loves math and dislikes reading- so we do math, reading, and playtime then history (more reading) and penmanship etc.. so they are not overwhelmed by thinking they have hours of reading. Another child might dislike something else- just so you break it up a bit:)
not really revolutionary- but- helpful?

One thing that comes to mind was learning to be content with a particular curriculum style. For us it is traditional/mainly textbook, for others it might be different. When I tried to work outside of my style & what worked for my children, school was much more stressful. Another benefit for me is that the year (and individual weeks & days) are so easy to plan. Teri's article about this was excellent.

Training the little ones to stay within boundaries has been something else that made a big difference. I have tried to keep them moving to new activites when my schedule says.

Tutoring the children once they can read & teaching them to complete assignments as independently as possible is a huge help.

Many of the MOTH suggestions...meal plans, chore lists, etc. are so very helpful.

Overall, the most revolutionary thing has been my own heart attitude! When I really see what I am doing as a calling from the Lord, when I truly see my children as blessings, when I accept discipline issues and interruptions with joy so that my character & my children's character can be developed, when I gain victory in having a meek & quiet spirit, and when I keep eternal goals in mind, my school & schedule are revolutionized!! I am far, far, far from having arrived in this area, but the Lord is doing great things, and the entire family benefits.

Yes, there is one thing that has revolutionized our schedule. Previously we would rise, eat breakfast, do our morning routine (brush teeth, make beds, etc.), do chores and than have devotions followed by school. No matter how organized I was we were always rushing. I found myself using a harsh tone of voice more often than I'd like. It seemed we would all start the school time so crabby. Soooo...

I altered our schedule and placed chores at 11:30-after school. I can't tell you what a blessing this has been. We aren't as rushed and the kids do their chores very well knowing that as soon as they're done they have free time until lunch. Also, the kids actually enjoy a physical activity after doing school all morning. For some reason I'd always assumed chores should be done first thing. However, if you have several children and are hsing, you begin to think unconventionally. :)

HTH,
Fonty
